Tourism, good or evil?

Tourism, good or evil?About four decades ago, no one expected that tourism would experience such a phenomenal growth and little thought was given to the impacts of tourism. Instead, tourism was considered a ‘smokeless industry’, ‘tailor made’ for third world countries. Today there is growing realization throughout the world that tourism like any other industry has a limit to its growth and it can pollute not only the physical but also the culture environment.
Although tourism looks easy and light-hearted, it is in fact a complex ambivalent phenomenon and its impacts on a destination are numerous and varied. As an industry, tourism generates money, increases employment opportunities and provides foreign exchange for poor countries. In addition it’s also a source of income to restore and maintain ancient monuments and national parks. Seen in this context, tourism is portrayed as a positive force. However as a, destroyer of fragile eco-systems, source of pollution, and disrupter of native cultures, tourism is seen as negative force.
So is tourism good or evil? and what counts more, the positive impacts or the negative impacts it has on the destination area.

everything in life has two sides, one postive and one negative. so does tourism. banning tourism to save the environment would be a ridiculous idea. only if tourists be a little more responsible, a little more sensible, the negative side of tourism can be significantly reduced. in this respect, I really approve of eco-tourism. you get to see the world, but don’t end up harming the environment.

Mass tourism has done more damage than the good one comest to think about.

Mountain and ecologically fragile destinations have an holding capacity.

Gross violations are damaging the environment of many famous destinations that is lowering the tourist value of the place

Going by the one man one life concept I advocate the idea of tourism so that a person can see the world while he is here and learn the differences that are brought about due to different cultures and beliefs. It’s a beautiful world and even though pollution and ecology might have suffered for this, I don’t see people closing down industrial areas and factories then how come are they talkin about lowering tourism?

Sustainable tourism is the way to go. We certainly need to respect the places we tour and that is something which has to come within. So we can try and educate children about respecting places and more importantly nature, right from their formative years so that they turn out to be socially, ecologically aware adults.

Tourism is necessary considering the personal experience as well as the economic benefits. Only need is to be more responsible, i.e. not throwing garbage all over and not scratching your names on the walls of monuments.

I truly agree with Jayaprashanth with his idea of sustainable tourism. It is impossible to curb the growth of tourism at this stage when our whole BIG planet is shrinking to become an accessible global village. Educating kids and grown ups to respect and care for all the places is IMPORTANT.

Even if it is bad it has become an essential evil in 21st century.
